*As many as ten thousand antifascist refugees of the Spanish Civil War, from Spain and around the world, fled to France around 1939. Interred, they were offered the chance to enlist in the Foreign Legion, which some thousands gladly accepted, eager to deliver on their grudge against the Nazis. Some of these veterans were among the first to enter Paris in 1944, repeating the motto, “First Paris, then Madrid,” hoping that the Allies would repay their sacrifices by liberating Spain.
